Over the years, phones have gone way beyond just being a device meant for making and receiving calls. They are not just a communication tool anymore as they perform a wide range of tasks including becoming your entertainment source and productivity hub. This is the reason both users and device makers have always dreamt of a device that is big enough to do all those tasks but compact enough to slide into one’s pocket.

This is where foldable smartphones come into the picture. As the name suggests, these phones are foldable in nature and also feature foldable displays. These phones act as a tablet when in unfolded state and thus offer a bigger display area for all those multi-tasking and entertainment needs. As for the portability factor, they can be folded and transformed into a traditional smartphone.

A number of OEMs including global brands have tried their hands at releasing foldable smartphones. In this article, we will have a look at the best foldable phones that you can buy in 2020.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is Samsung’s third and the latest foldable smartphone. It is a flagship phone which means you can expect all premium and high-end features and specifications from this device. It sports a primary 7.6-inch display on the inside and a secondary 6.2-inch display on the outside. The second display remains accessible even when the phone is folded so that you do not have to unfold the device every single time you want to do or check something. It will also be 5G compatible.

Samsung has not revealed any other details about the Galaxy Z Fold 2 yet but it is set to arrive in Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black color variants. We are expecting further information including pricing and availability details to become available in the coming months.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G

This is the original Samsung Galaxy Fold that was introduced last year. It was the first-ever foldable smartphone release from the company. It has a bigger 7.3-inch Super AMOLED display (2152 x 1536 pixels) on the inside and a much smaller 4.5-inch Dynamic AMOLED display (1680 x 720 pixels) on the outside. This is because the external display was intended only for quick check purposes like seeing current time, weather, notifications, alarms, etc.

Under the hood, it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of onboard storage. There triple rear cameras featuring two 12-megapixel sensors and a 16-megapixel sensor. As for on the front, you will find a 10-megapixel sensor paired with an 8-megapixel sensor. It is packed with a 4,380mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging, 15W fast wireless charging, and 9W reverse wireless charging. The phone is available in both 5G and 4G LTE only variants.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G

If you are looking for a somewhat affordable foldable smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G could be your choice. The phone has a design that resembles flip phones from the old times. It has a 6.7-inch main AMOLED display (2636 x 1080 pixels) that is on the inside. The external display is only 1.1-inch in size and offers only 112 x 300 pixels. It is strictly meant for accessing quick information like temperature, time, and notifications.

There is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB onboard storage. The rear side has dual 12-megapixel cameras and the front has a single 10-megapixel camera sensor. The battery capacity on this device is 3,300mAh with 15W fast charging support. The phone can be purchased with 5G or 4G LTE-only connectivity.

Huawei Mate XS

The Huawei Mate XS is the second foldable smartphone from the Chinese tech giant. It sports an 8-inch OLED display (2200 x 2480 pixels) that folds outwards. It means even when you fold the phone, the display remains visible on the outside which is exactly opposite of what you would find on most foldable phones. It offers a 6.6-inch display when in the folded state for a more compact usage.

It features HiSilicon Kirin 990 processor paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of onboard storage. There are three camera sensors: 40-megapixel, 16-megapixel, and 8-megapixel. The phone does not have a dedicated selfie camera as those three sensors can be used for selfie and video calling purposes as well. The whole package is powered by a 4,500mAh battery supported by 55W fast charging.

Motorola RAZR (2019)

If you are looking for a foldable smartphone that costs cheaper, the Motorola RAZR (2019) is worth the consideration. It is a phone that not only shares its name with the iconic RAZR but also the product design. It is exactly the same phone but that smaller display and physical keyboard have been replaced with a single huge display panel.

The Motorola RAZR sports a 6.2-inch P-OLED display with 2142 x 846 pixels resolution. The secondary display is a 2.7-inch G-OLED panel with 600 x 800 pixels. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor which is one reason behind its relatively lower pricing than Samsung’s offerings. The single configuration includes 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage.

The phone has a single 16-megapixel rear shooter and a 5-megapixel front shooter. The battery capacity is quite small at 2,510mAh which could be an issue of concern for some. However, there is support for 15W fast charging.

Microsoft Surface Duo

The Surface Duo is an Android-powered foldable device from Microsoft. It features two OLED displays of 5.6-inch each and 1800 x 1350 pixels resolution. Both of these displays are on the inside and when the device is unfolded, they combine to offer a real estate of 8.1-inch with 2700 x 1800 pixels. Since there is no external display, you have no choice but to unfold the device every time you want to do something.

It features Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor coupled with 6GB of RAM and 256GB onboard storage. There is a single 11-megapixel camera for both taking photos and selfies. The battery capacity on the device is 3,577mAh with 18W fast charging support.
